Drainage in Clydach
Clydach is a Swansea Valley village on the River Tawe and the Swansea Canal, in the City and County of Swansea just north of the city. Its drainage character is shaped by the river at the valley floor, the steep valley sides, and the made ground left by the historic Mond nickel works that gave the village much of its identity.
The terraced streets built for the valley's industrial workforce make up much of Clydach's housing, laid out with salt-glazed clay drainage now well over a century old. The open joints, cracks, and root intrusion typical of ageing clay pipe are the most common cause of the blockages we clear in the village and the neighbouring communities of Ynystawe and Trebanos.
The River Tawe runs along the valley floor with the Swansea Canal alongside it, and low-lying properties near the water face flood risk during the heavy rainfall that funnels down the Swansea Valley. In intense downpours the river's influence can combine with an overwhelmed combined sewer network to cause backups in valley-floor properties, and Natural Resources Wales publishes flood-risk information for the area.
Industry has shaped the ground beneath the village. The Mond nickel works and other works along the lower valley have left areas of made ground where old industrial fill affects how drainage pipes bed and settle, sometimes producing sags or joint movement over time. The combined sewers operated by Welsh Water (Dŵr Cymru) carry foul and surface water together and can be overwhelmed during heavy rain.
The valley sides rise steeply on either side, so streets climbing away from the floor — and the settlements up the valley such as Craig-cefn-parc — rely on fast gravity runs. Properties higher up can experience pipe scouring and movement, while those lower down receive the surface water shed from above.
